Brothers and sisters, friends!
e are glad to welcome you to the web site of the Tikhvin Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God.
It's a special time now for our recently reopened monastery: the time of revival. The brotherhood, parishioners, pilgrims and our numerous friends and benefactors for many years had been preparing for the return home of a great sacrament of the Orthodox Christianity — the miracle-working Tikhvin icon of Virgin Mary. In 2004 the holy image came back to its home tenement from the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Chicago, USA, accompanied by Very Rev. Sergey Garklavs, the safekeeper of the image, His Beatitude Metropolitan Herman, primate of the Orthodox Church in America and His Holiness Alexy II, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia.
This image of Theotokos Hodegetria ("the guide", "showing the Way") miraculously appeared in Russia in 1383; it linked Russia to the very roots and matrix of Christendom: the Holy Land and, later, Byzantium. But amid the terrible calamities of XX century, during WWII — the Great Patriotic War for Russians — the icon left Russian soil to spend several years in war-torn Europe and then more than half a century in the US.
I would like to thank all our friends and benefactors for their assistance in the restoration. Much has been done over the last several years; still more is yet to be accomplished. We ask for your prayers to give us strength in our rebuilding efforts and renewal of spiritual life at the place blessed by God.
The English section of the web site will be expanded in the coming months. So far the site is mostly in Russian. You can also download and view a PDF brochure in English containing a brief history of the monastery and the icon. If you read Church-Slavonic, there is also a downloadable Akathist to the Mother of God — a praiseful hymn to celebrate the miraculous apparition of the holy image. (The free Adobe® Reader® required to view the documents is available from Adobe Systems.)
Hodegetria in Greek means guide. It is also a type of an iconographic image of the Mother of God. This image is as divinely beautiful as it is clear in its message: she guides, literally directs with her hand at the Way, Truth and Life — Christ, Infant God. Brothers and sisters, there is no more important and salvatory way than this Way.
With Love in Christ,
of the Tikhvin Men's Monastery

̉oday, like the lucid sun, your fair icon shines for us in the firmament, O Theotokos, with rays of mercy enlightening the world. And Great Russia, with reverence embracing it like a heavenly bestowal, glorifies you, the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven, and gladly dignifies Christ our Lord who was born of you. Pray to Him, O Queen and sovereign Virgin, that He keep all Christian cities and lands safe from all the enemy wiles and that He grant salvation to those who kneel faithfully to His divine and Your most holy image, O unwedded Bride.
